Supplemental Security Income is a federal program designed to help people who are disabled, blind, or aged and who have little to no income or other resources. Some of the major requirements for SSI eligibility include:

• Being 65 or older, blind, or with a disability that keeps you from doing any substantially gainful activity for at least a year
• Having limited income and assets
• Having applied for all other benefits to which you are entitled
• Being a U.S. citizen or in a certain category of "qualified aliens"
• Being a resident of one of the 50 states, Washington, D.C. or the Northern Mariana Islands
• Not being recently absent from the U.S. for more than a certain period of time
